Sierra de Espuña
national park |
 |
|
Because of the many beautiful walks in the area, the
Mazarrón
Country Club boasts its own walking club, which meets every
Wednesday. For those who prefer to go it alone, the area offers the
beautiful
Sierra de Espuña
mountains. Located near Totana,
in the very centre of
the Murcia region,
the mountains were first described in
1584 as a natural
space of great scenic beauty. They
are now
classified as a national park. Featuring sandstone, dolomite, marl
and limestone rocks, the area boasts some unusual formations
including ‘El Gigante’, the giant,
El Purgatorio, Las Alquerías, La Arboleja, El Cerro de las Cabras,
La Fuente del Sol, Las Cunas,
from where
you can enjoy a beautiful view of the mountainous countryside. To
the south of the famous
‘Pico Morrón’
peak is Collao Bermejo, a traditional area for hiking. |

|
Murcia’s splendid mountain ranges and
beautiful, unspoilt coastline are perfect places for walkers.
Whatever your ability, there is a walk to suit you: |
 |
|

|
| Why not start
off your holiday with an easy 9km walk? This route takes in
the sand dunes of the Playa Larga (lit: long beach) and the
lakes of Rasall, an area favoured by breeding birds. The walk
also offers fantastic views of the Cabo de Palos and its
beautiful lighthouse. |
| |
| Alternatively,
why not try the 12km Playa del Portús-Campillo de Adentro-La
Azohia, a coastal walk ending up at one of Mazarrón area’s
most beautiful beaches. |
| |
| Or, there’s the
10km Isla Plana, Rambla del Cañar-Tallante walk, taking in
notable local sights such as the Cueva del Caballo (lit: Cave
of the Horse) the remains of an old Mediterranean wood and
views of the Carrascas hills. |

Finally, there’s the three-four hour
circular walk, taking in Cuestas del Cedacero and Peñas Blancas.
Look out for the magnificent views of the Isla Plana and the
beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mazarrón, some of the area’s
best-preserved iron mines and the glorious hills of Peñas Blancas.
On the way, this walk passes traditional Murcian houses, built with
materials such as limestone and lime mortar, and traditional
villages such as El Rincón de Tallante. |
 |
 |
|
Alternatively, why not try a dip in
the local thermal mud baths? Favoured by generations of Murcians,
the open-air, mineral-rich mud baths have been carved
out by a natural underwater hot spring that bubbles day
and night. |
